Student Expectations
Several BYOD classrooms have adopted the acronym PRIDE to describe student expectations.
Self-ReflectionAlthough students should be involved in the development of digital contracts, the teacher must ultimately be comfortable with all of the expectations, procedures etc. that are agreed upon. Teachers should reflect upon their own BYOD philosophy and expectations prior to engaging in such an activity with students.
Free Tools to Monitor Student BehaviourClass Dojo is a behaviour management tool in which each student has a profile (image or avatar) through which teachers can assign positive and negative points throughout the lesson. Students and parents can review their profiles by logging into their accounts. Teachers who share students can opt to collaborate with one another to better track students' behaviours throughout the day. Broadcasts and photos can also be shared.
Class Charts is similar to Class Dojo; however, it uses a seating plan design. It also allows you to enter key information into students' profiles, such as reading level, free/reduced lunch status, in-care status etc. These categories, as well as the behaviours, are customizable.
Teacher Kit also incorporates seating plans and customizable behaviours. Teacher kit also functions well as a learning management system for recording attendance, grades, and evaluation of activities. Over time, you can see how assigned behaviors correlate with classroom grades.

Digital Social ContractRay (2012), a teacher librarian in Vancouver, suggests collaboratively creating a digital social contract with students at the start of your BYOD program.
Take a moment to share your BYOD expectations with other teachers on this tutorial's blog. For example, when will you allow students to use devices? Will students be allowed to use various apps and tools or would you prefer that they use the ones you prescribe? What will be the consequences for students not following the expectations?

Please ensure that you request permission to use any new app and tech tools with your district administrators. A Privacy Impact Assessment may need to be conducted and parental consent may be required. Refer to this website's BYOD 101 page for more information.
